Slack is an effective communication tool if you are insane enough to require library student workers to use it during every shift at the reference desk. As in the case of the Reference & Research Services Department of Gleeson Library, the use of Slack, described by the presenter as “social media for work,” can streamline reference desk operations through information sharing, can act as a QA tool of student assistant skill, and can promote transparency of function between library departments. Plus, it makes responding to a piece of library information with the alien emoji perfectly acceptable!
